RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, speaking at the centenary lecture series '100 Years of the Sangh – New Horizons' in New Delhi on Thursday, dismissed claims about the Sangh’s role in BJP’s leadership changes. He said the appointment of the party’s new president was entirely an internal matter for the BJP, adding, 'If RSS had chosen the president, would it have taken so long? Bhagwat also emphasized that the RSS only works for nation-building and has no part in political appointments. At the event, he highlighted that the New Education Policy should move beyond rote learning and focus on shaping responsible individuals.
Speaking about the education system, Bhagwat said that India’s traditional education system was dismantled during the colonial era, and the British implemented a new system for their own convenience. In today’s independent India, he stressed, there is a need for an education system that can guide society. He highlighted the importance of reviving the Gurukul model and giving special attention to the Sanskrit language. According to Bhagwat, along with scientific education, India’s knowledge traditions should also be given due importance.
Speaking on the New Education Policy (NEP), Bhagwat said that instead of encouraging rote memorization, it should prioritize moral values and cultural grounding. He cautioned that if technology falls into uneducated hands, it could be misused. Therefore, education should not be limited to providing technical skills, but should also shape individuals into responsible and value-driven citizens.
Bhagwat further said that education should not only be viewed from a religious perspective, but also as a medium to spread India’s cultural heritage and social values. He emphasized that independent India should design its education policy in such a way that it not only makes citizens technically competent but also connects them to the country’s traditions, culture, and duties.
